Maintenance Engineering Apprentice

What is your current role (& what do you do)?

I am currently studying the Ulster University foundation degree in Engineering (FD Eng) with Specialisms (Manufacturing Engineering) Level 5. My role as Maintenance Engineering Apprentice involves undertaking weekly Whey Preventative Maintenance on all Whey room installations and identifying potential hazards and breakdowns before they occur. I am also undertaking Bulk Cheese mechanical fitting training on all installations in the Bulk Cheese area. Due to the broad coverage of my course, my mentor and line manager ensure I am assigned to departments that align with the modules I will be studying.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I decided to undertake an apprenticeship for several reasons, including being a good role model to my children. I love taking on challenges – as a highly ambitious individual, I felt this opportunity contributes immensely towards my personal development.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

I would say to someone considering an apprenticeship that "one finds limits by pushing them". It's an amazing opportunity and there are no age limits as long as you put in the necessary work. Skills upgrading is essential to be able to find your place in this current fast changing world in terms of technology and AI so one needs to keep in touch through skills and personal development.
